Login security

Password rules

When you set your VSC system password, you are asked to set a new password on it. Please follow these recommendations when choosing your password:

  • The password should be unique. Do not re-use a password you have used on other accounts.
  • Don’t use common words, that is anything that you can find in a dictionary. This also includes simple spelling variations: neither password, passw0rd nor password12345 are good passwords.
  • Minimum length is 10 characters.
  • Use least one digit, one lower and upper case letter and one of '!@#$%^&*?_~(),-".'

Tip

Use a truly random password. You can use a random generator to create your password.

Tip

Write your password down! Don't have it next to your computer, but it is better to have a strong password written on a piece of paper in your wallet than to have a weak password in your head.

Tip

You can also use a password manager, like 1Password, Keypass or Lastpass. Just keep in mind that it will not fill in your credentials in the SSH client.

Reporting suspicious activity

When logging into a system, please read the “last login” information and verify that it matches your last login to the system. If it does not match, someone else might be using your account.
